Karen received her New Jersey Real Estate License in 1973 while attending Georgetown University. In 1976, the same year her mother opened Lois Schneider Realtor, she graduated from Georgetown with a B.S. in Nursing. Karen was named to the company's Board of Directors in 1995 and has remained connected to the business by providing numerous real estate transactions referrals.
Karen continued her education at Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C. and since graduating in 1982 she has been a practicing attorney, most recently serving as Project Director for D.C. Appleseed's HIV/AIDS Project, as well as consulting on legal and medical issues to the D.C. Superior Court and the D.C. Department of Mental Health. Prior to this, Karen spent ten years as the Special Master appointed by the U.S. District Court to oversee conditions of confinement in the D.C. prisons and jails. Her legal career began as a partner at Milliken, Van Susteren and Canan, P.C., where she litigated criminal defense, medical malpractice and civil rights cases.
Karen is an active volunteer, serving on governing boards and chairing fundraising events for various schools and community groups. At Georgetown University, she is currently on the Board of Governors for the Alumni Association, Vice President of the Hoya Hoop Club, a guest lecturer and an alumni interviewer.
Karen and her husband, David Heffernan, have two children, Megan and Katie.
